Level One
The best place to start is at the beginning. Level One teaches the essential foundational skills of an executive coach, including the models and structures that make for high performance coaching sessions. We teach these skills and tools in a very practical and experiential way, building on the knowledge already in the room. Those new to executive coaching and those with more experience will benefit from this rigorous foundational program.

1.1 Application and Pre-Work

Prior to commencement of Level One training, potential coaches are invited to complete the application form, stating background, qualifications, relevant experience and reasons for wanting to become a coach. The Level One course is open to mature, professional people with experience in the corporate arena, or a background in the fields of management, human resources, facilitation, consulting, psychology/counselling, training, education and/or leadership.

Prior to commencement of Level One, each participant is invited to engage in background reading, including the paper Integral Coaching: A Crucible for Change, Hilary Armstrong, John Matthews and Chip McFarlane.  All reading and logistics will be sent to before the program, including additional suggestions for recommended reading.

A “coaching styles” questionnaire is also completed prior to commencement of Level One.

1.2 Level One Training - Course Content
At the end of Level One you will:
  • Understand what executive coaching is and the context within which it sits,
  • Have learnt and applied foundational models of executive coaching,
  • Be able to demonstrate the core competencies of an executive coach,
  • Have established your particular style as an executive coach and learnt how to develop it,
  • Have learnt about the coaching relationship, in terms of framework, processes and outcomes,
  • Have learnt how to frame and use coaching questions,
  • Have practiced coaching and also had the experience of being coached,
  • Have developed your "coaching toolbox" of useful models and skills,
  • Complete a reflective learning task which measures your understanding.

A comprehensive list of resources will be provided as part of the course.

Level One - Course Details
The course comprises:
  • A three day intensive, experiential workshop,
  • Monthly coaching supervision sessions (minimum of three required for certification and first year free of charge),
  • A written Reflective Learning Task,
  • Ongoing professional development sessions through the Institute's Alumni Community of Practice (miniumum of one year membership is included in the course fee).

The course emphasis is on interaction and practice. Participants apply the techniques throughout the three days and in the coaching supervision sessions following the course.

A certificate is issued on successful completion of the course. Investment for Level One: AU$3,200* plus GST ($3,520 including GST).

* A discounted price of $6,000 + GST for Levels One and Two is available when payment is received for both levels in advance of commencement of Level One. These rates apply to end 2008 only.

1.3 Level One – Reflective Learning Task, Supervision and Coaching
After the Level One workshop participants are required to attend a minimum of three supervision sessions (two hour sessions, held monthly in Sydney and Melbourne*), two alumni professional development forums and one individual coaching session. Each participant is also required to complete a reflective learning task (to be written and submitted within three months from date of training).

* For those based outside of Sydney and Melbourne, supervision sessions will be available via teleconferencing, and certification can be completed in this way if necessary.

1.4 Level One - Certification

Successful completion of all Level One requirements leads to certification at that level.

"This (level one) is a useful three days regardless of whether or not your intention is to be an executive coach, because the learnings can be transferred and used across every aspect of your life to improve the way you relate and communicate with others.”
Jenni de Keyzer, Senior Consultant, Mark Two Consulting
