Coaching Supervision at the Institute

The Institute is delighted to offer professional supervision for executive coaches, both for our alumni and for coaches trained elsewhere.

As the field of executive coaching has grown, the need for professional supervision of coaches as part of their ongoing professional development has become apparent.

While supervision has existed for many years in various ‘helping professions’, the concept of supervision for executive coaches is relatively new.  We define coaching supervision as;

A systematic process for the ongoing development of the executive coach in which personal, relational, professional and contextual issues arising from coaching practice are explored through reflection, action and inquiry.

In 2006, compulsory supervision for all new coaches trained by the Institute was introduced as part of their training. We also extended supervision to our Alumni, recognising that it is an essential part of our, and every executive coach’s, professional development. This is a free service and the Institute’s monthly coaching supervision sessions – held in Sydney, Melbourne and by conference call – are open to all Alumni of the Institute’s coach training programs and are well attended.

The Institute’s supervision sessions for alumni are run over one or two hours in round table, peer groups. Each table of five to six people is supervised/facilitated by a senior executive coach. The process is built on the metaskills and skills of IEC executive coaching, requiring reflective practice, collaborative inquiry, questioning and self awareness.  We recognise different levels of relationship in supervision and encourage reflection at all levels.

The Institute now offers one-to-one (and group, where relevant) coaching supervision to coaches not trained by us.  If you are not an alumni member and would like to be supervised by the Institute’s experienced executive coaching supervisors, please email us at coach@iecoaching.com
